ABOUT US
In 1967, New Zealand Government Railways announced the Fairlie branch line was to close, after 93 years of service to Pleasant Point and 84 years of service to the Mackenzie Country, the Fairlie Flyer was no more. The line had been losing $43,000 a year and like many other lines around the country, could not compete against road transport.
In 1970 the locals of Pleasant Point got together to preserve history for future generations. forming the Pleasant Point Railway and Historical Society. Since then we have collected much local and railway history that is on display for all to see on our opendays. Nowadays we have become a multi-award-winning, world-renowned attraction.
STEAMING DAYS
Both steam trains and the Model T Ford railcar operate between Pleasant Point Station and Keane's Crossing on days throughout the year. Including some special events running, such as Kiwi the Engine and Friends at Easter, as well as the Get to the Point street fair on the first Saturday in November. Steam Train running day timetable.
RAILCAR GUIDED TOURS
At times, the Model T Ford Railcar runs on its own, with the driver giving a special 45-minute conducted tour around our 2 sites. Railcar-only days are listed separately from the steam train running days. Railcar running day timetable.
"The ride in the old Railcar and to be able to relive the train journeys from yesteryear in the amazingly restored carriages and see the old steam engine up close. Everything is immaculate and lovingly well presented, we were very impressed."
